Recycling Program:
The City of Oak Park has been providing curb-side recycling in conjunction with garbage pick-up since 1993. The goal of the program is to reach a 60% participation rate. Presently, a large number of items are accepted into the recycling program, including newspapers, magazines, catalogs, brown paper bags, telephone books, plastic jugs and bottles, glass bottles and jars, metal cans, pie tins, paint and aerosol cans, and household batteries. More products may be added as markets expand.
The City received a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to create a multilingual recycling education program. Flyers were distributed in Russian and Arabic to inform non-English speaking Oak Park residents about recycling. The program received statewide and national recognition. The City of Oak Park received a certificate of achievement from the Michigan Municipal League and also received an Honorable Mention from the Michigan Recycling Coalition. National recognition was given by Public Technologies, Incorporated through a program entitled "Winning Solutions '94," in which public entities are cited for their achievements.
